Global Microfinance Brigades

The JHU chapter of Global Microfinance Brigades works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to promote global health and sustainable development that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually. Microfinance is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services. During the trips that take place during winter break or summer vacation, students will empower communities and help low income villagers in Honduras with opportunities to obtain low interest loans to invest in their farms or alternative income generating opportunities.

Stocks in the Future

Stocks in the Future teaches middle school students financial literacy and life skills involving money. A three-year curriculum was originally developed under Johns Hopkins University that introduced business concepts, expansion possibilities, reasons for taking a company public, and ways to compare company performances. Social Investment Outreach has decided to get involved with the program and created a simulator on Microsoft Excel and additional lesson plans that can be used by students to put their business acumen into practice. We plan to start teaching at middle schools this semester so volunteers are needed!

Individuals can lend as little as $25 and make an impact on the lives of people who can utilize these funds to jumpstart their careers. Social Investment Outreach has made over $1,000 worth of loans using KIVA and we hope you will also contribute to this cause by either donating to the SIO KIVA fund or making your account online at kiva.org.
